Great Learning Series

Listed here are an assemblage of series that provide a deep and envigorating dialogue on many number of subjects. Most series are old enough to be found freely online, but I endeavor to include enough information so that they might still be found.

  • Cosmos: A Personal Voyage, PBS

    • The famous television series presented by Carl Sagan. Covering a wide range of topics but always servicing a rich appreciation for science, this series has established itself as one of the most significant television series.

  • Civilisation and Civilisations, BBC

    • Kenneth Clarke paints a beautiful and evocative picture of the traditional narrative of Western art and culture. The 2018 addition expands the exploration beyond the grand Western narrative with insightful commentary as our understanding has changed in the years since Clarke’s orginal broadcast.

  • The Western Tradition, Annenberg

    • Historian of Western civilization, Eugen Weber begins at the very beginning and outlines the basic transitions and periods of traditional Western Civilization.

  • Books That Have Made History: Books That Can Change Your Life, The Great Courses

    • Prof. J Rufus Fears goes through his selected books that defined and the periods they were written in. He outlines his clear conepts for what constitutes a great book and travels through a number of themes instead of relating the books chronologically.

  • Great Books, The Learning Channel

    • A television documentary program created by Walter Cronkite and Jonathan Ward giving in-depth insight into some of Literature’s greatest fiction and nonfiction books. Aired from 8 Sep. 19931 - 20 Jun. 2006

  • The Adventure of English, ITV

    • English broadcaster, Melvyn Bragg recounts the most important events and changes that occurred to the English language leading up to the modern language we speak today.

  • Testament

  • From Socrates to Sartre

  • Human, All too Human

  • Self Under Siege

  • Great Minds / Authors

  • The Bible and Western Culture

  • The Great Philosophers with Bryan Magee

  • Connections, BBC

    • A series exploring and connecting various scientific concepts presented by James Burke. The series is concise and witty mainly from Burkes delivery. This series includes the viral clip called “The Greatest Shot in Television”
